Tek enters Thai smartphone market

Competition between smartphone makers in Thailand is hting up as new Asian handset companies make inroads into the promising mobile computing market to grab a significant market share.

Tek Computer Inc, a Taiwanese computer maker, plans to spend US$4 million to promote the relse of its first smartphone in the Thai market. "We aim to have a 10% share in the local smartphone market this yr, making us a top-five player," said Jeff Lo, newly appointed country manager of Tek Computer (Thailand).

The jump onto the smartphone bandwagon is to crte a new revenue strm and offset a sharp revenue decline from computer sales.

Thailand's smartphone market is expected to have skyrocketing growth this yr with sales of 14-20 million units thanks to hvy 3G migration promotional campaigns from mobile operators.

To capitalise on demand, Mr Lo said Tek will introduce a full range of smartphone models in Thailand this yr, starting from May.

The company yesterday launched its first three Zenfone models, fturing four-, five- and six-inch displays priced at 2,990, 5,990 and 8,990 baht, respectively. Target users are 18-35 yrs old.
